The Somerset County Tourism website is a great place to start your free time adventures!

Here are a few spots that all of us who visit the area often really like -

Duke Farms, Route 206 and Dukes Parkway West, Hillsborough - 2,600 acres of now open to the public space for hiking, biking and tram tours inside the walls of the Duke Estate, now an environmental preserve and education center. Old Duke stables, now reception center, offers history of the Duke family dynasty as well as exhibits on environmental stewardship and a great snack bar. 
 
Wallace House, Washington and Somerset streets, Somerville. - George and Martha Washington's headquarters during the winter of 1779 while troops were camped along the Watchungs. Lafayette a frequent guest. You could be too. Guided tours every Saturday1-4 pm, by appointment, 908-725-1015.
 
Shopping, from Somerville's resurrected Main and Division streets to the Bridgewater Commons adjacent to the Marriott, from collectibles and fine antiques to upscale Bloomingdales and everything in between.
 
Somerville Fire Museum, 23 North Doughty Ave. - Two floors of horse drawn and motorized fire apparatus and memorabilia dating back to 1850. The restored historic site is open every Saturday from 10 am-noon, featuring a tour of the borough's history as seen through the eyes of its volunteer fire service.
 
Duke Island Park, Old York Road, Bridgewater - The first of Somerset's designated county parks, this venerable site offers a hundred of acres of paved hiking trails, picnic areas and just some beautiful "get away from it all" scenery along the Raritan River. Recent added attractions include the occasional sightings of Bald Eagles who nest nearby.
